About us
The Department of Power Electronics and Machines follows the tradition of the University of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (VŠSE) with a history from 1949. Many patents, innovative solutions, and new concepts of electric drives for modern e-mobility and energy have been developed in our laboratories. We developed complex cyber-physical technologies, including energy sources, power electronics, electromechanical energy conversion systems, control electronics, sensors, and control algorithms including artificial intelligence. Our results are mainly applied to transport technology (road, rail, aviation), energy, robotics, industrial automation, and manufacturing equipment and technologies.
Main activities in general
-
Each of the described devices has a specific life cycle that we are able to cover in the department. Usually, for a new device, it starts with defining the necessary parameters and requirements for the device (inverter, control system, machine). Generally, a technical specification is created for each device to focus on its requirements and parameters.
- Depending on the final device, the specification is used to create a first concept design, a theoretical and mathematical description of the various functional parts of the device.
- With the support of computers (CAD, CAM), we are creating detailed simulation models based on the mathematical description, possibly using, for example, the finite element method.
- With the support of CAD and CAM we are creating detailed design and production documentation.
- We are creating control algorithms for a given device, from the lowest level, where we take care of the basic functionality of the microcontroller, through the communication buses to higher layers of software and interfaces for operating the device (HMI) or PC application.
- Based on the design and documentation, we are producing prototypes of inverters, control systems, machines, and finally, complete prototypes.
- The developed prototypes are commissioned and tested in laboratory conditions and thoroughly tested under real-life operating conditions.
